Priest's Ponderings - Last Sunday after the Epiphany

By The Rev. Bob Davidson, Bridge Priest

This coming Sunday, February 11 we will focus on the theme “Your LIGHT in the Beloved.”

This week’s worship theme will feature a presentation by ministries focusing on Christian formation, Children, Youth and Young Adults.  St. Paul’s is privileged to have dedicated parishioners who instill the Light of Christ into younger lives that will hopefully sustain them their whole lives with faith in God.

Mark’s gospel narrates the vivid and miraculous scene of the Transfiguration of Jesus on the Mountain.  We hear these words:

“Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus.”

During the season of Epiphany, we have followed God’s light breaking into the world, drawing followers of Jesus into the work of missionaries and now we have come full circle when Jesus is TRANSFIGURED in the presence of his inner core of disciples.

Appearing with Moses and Elijah prefigures the death of Jesus taking his place with God among the Patriarchs and Prophets who have proceeded him.  Jesus shone with God’s light in dazzling array.  As at the Baptism of Jesus a voice affirms God’s son as Beloved.

May this Sunday as we gather for the last Sunday of this Epiphany season allow you to not only see Christ’s radiance as the Beloved Son, but that each of us would likewise come to embrace that WE are God’s beloved and cherished son and daughter.

Epiphany blessings to you and your family,

Rev. Bob Davidson, Bridge Priest
